More information.
- The Treaty of Waitangi was a written agreement made in 1840 ... After that, New Zealand became a colony of Britain and Māori ... Even though not all chiefs signed the treaty, the British
- government decided it placed all Māori under British authority. It did not take long for conflicts to arise between Māori.
- 5 years before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi British resident James Busby drew up a Declaration of Independence without authorisation from his superiors. The need for the Declaration appears to have been triggered by the activities of an eccentric Frenchman, Charles de Thierry, who claimed that he would set up a “sovereign and independent state” in the Hokianga district.
- The Declaration was signed by 34 northern chiefs. Additional signatures, including some from further south, were added over the next four years.
